How to stop a panic attack by becoming the boss of your mind

Updated: Feb 25, 2023

Panic attacks can eat away at you and take all the enjoyment out of your life.

It can make you stop doing things you like to do, just because of the fear that panic will pop up at any time. You start to avoid specific situations where panic attacks might pop up and terrorize you.

Often panic attacks start during times when stress is higher than normal, whether as a result of one particular event or a build-up of many experiences.

"Panic attack" is a cruel metaphor, as nothing is actually attacked. It is about regulating and being in control of how we react to stressors. The key to stopping panic attacks is not to let go of them altogether, but rather to align the panic response to when it is really needed.

Why do panic attacks happen?

There is a natural reason why we need some sort of reaction to an experience.

  • Fast breathing and an increased heart rate helps your body to exercise.

  • Sweaty palms will give your hands better grip, once dry.

  • Vomit can help you deter a potential predator.

Some of these reactions can be useful and are needed in day-to-day life, but they are not useful when they become panic attacks.

If you are scared, or feel the need to avoid someone, something or some place, then your panic response will accept that person/thing/place as threatening.

How do I control my panic attacks?

By staying calm you can teach your panic response that the situation you are in is not threatening. You can control your panic attack by:

  • Resetting your breathing. Take a few deep breaths, hold your breath for 10 or15 seconds, and then continue breathing more calmly.

  • Stop running. By slowing down you effectively tell your panic there is no real danger.

Very soon the panic will realise it is not needed and you will notice how the panic starts to calm down.

How can hypnosis help with panic attacks?

Hypnosis can help by having you imagine the feeling of panic, followed by you feeling that panic just drain away. It will help your mind let go of the feeling of danger and instead establish a confident and calm scenario.

Where in the past the panic would have kicked in, it now has no place to pop up.

You do not have to live with panic attacks, so take back that power.
